MOTHER’S DAY 2025

  • The 5th commandment (Ex 20:12) says to:

  • Honor your father and mother that it may go well with you in the land…

  • Today is a day set apart to honor & appreciate moms.

  • Honor & give thanks to God for the blessing of motherhood.

  • It can be a joy-filled, happy day for some of us.

  • But Mother’s Day can also be a hard day for many.

  • We are commanded to:

Romans 12:15 ESV

15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.

  • Some of you are grieving here on Mother's Day.

  • Some of you are single.

  • Some of you have been trying to conceive for a long time.

  • Some of you may feel unappreciated and undervalued.

  • Some of you feel like you’re doing it all on your own.

  • Some of you are overjoyed today.

  • Thankful.

  • All of us can be thankful today…no matter our circumstances.

  • Because God’s Word and God’s work through God’s Son speaks to all us.

  • Motherhood is such a wonderful, God-given gift.

  • Motherhood was always meant to point us to the ultimate gift…Jesus.

  • Col 1:16 → “...all things were created through him and for him.”

  • So how does this story begin?

Genesis 1:27-28 ESV

27 So God created man in his own image,

    in the image of God he created him;

male and female he created them.

28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

  • God’s mission is to fill the earth with His image bearers

  • He is going to use mothers to accomplish this mission

  • But, because we are broken & sinful…

  • We can no longer accomplish God’s mission…

  • But God makes a promise:

Genesis 3:14-15 CSB

14 So the LORD God said to the serpent:

Because you have done this,

you are cursed more than any livestock

and more than any wild animal.

You will move on your belly

and eat dust all the days of your life.

15 I will put hostility between you and the woman,

and between your offspring and her offspring.[d]

He will strike your head,

and you will strike his heel.

  • The very first mention of the gospel in the Bible

  • Work is gonna be tough

  • Marriage is gonna be tough.

  • Having kids is gonna be tough.

  • Raising kids is gonna be tough.

  • Childbirth will be difficult & painful.

MOTHERS WHO SUFFERED IN THE BIBLE

  • Eve → Cain & Abel (Gen 4:8)

  • Sarah → gave birth to Isaac (Gen 11:30; Gen 21:1-2)

  • Rebekah → gave birth to Esau & Jacob (Genesis 25:21)

  • Rachel → gave birth to Joseph (Genesis 29:31; Gen 30:22-24)

  • Moses’s mom (Exodus 2:1-10)

  • Naomi (Ruth 1:3-5)

  • Hannah → gave birth to Samuel (1 Samuel 1:1-2)

  • Samson’s mother, wife of Manoah, was barren (Judges 13:1-3)

  • Elizabeth → gave birth to John the baptizer (Luke 1:7)

  • Who is the next woman mentioned in the Bible giving birth?

  • Are there any more barren women mentioned in the Bible after Mary?

  • Why?

  • Jesus came.

  • His kingdom came.

  • The promise came.

Revelation 21:5 ESV

5 And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.”

  • New birth.

John 3:1-8 ESV

1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus[a] by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again[b] he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.[c] 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You[d] must be born again.’ 8 The wind[e] blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

  • This is the new birth.

  • This is being born of the Spirit.

  • New creation.

2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation [Or creature].

The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

  • New birth.

  • New creatures.

  • New power.

  • New hope.

  • To accomplish God’s mission.

Matthew 28:18-20 ESV

18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[b] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

  • Our Lord Jesus has given us a mission.

  • We have all been called to produce discipleship fruit with our lives.

  • To be image-bearers

  • To multiply & make more image-bearers.

  • Paul says in 2 Corinthians:

2 Corinthians 5:20-21 ESV

20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God [is] making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

  • He bore our image of sin…

  • So that we might be able to bear His image of righteousness before God.

  • Not only before God, but to the whole world.

  • Mother’s Day is about honoring mothers.

  • THANK YOU.

  • I also want to honor all of the christian spiritual mothers…

  • Doing the hard work of discipleship in the lives of others.

  • THANK YOU.

  • The Bible teaches that we are a new spiritual household.

  • Mothers & fathers

  • Brothers & sisters

  • Sons & daughters

  • God’s mission: To invite people into Life with Jesus.

  • This is the day that the Lord has made.

  • Let us rejoice & be glad in it.

  • Just like a mom…God is compassionate

  • Just like a mom…God is a safe place to run to.

  • May today be a day that we honor all the moms…

  • who have done so much for all of us

  • Moms sacrifice so much of themselves for the sake of their children.

  • Just like Jesus.

Proverbs 31:15 ESV

15 She rises while it is yet night

and provides food for her household

Proverbs 31:17 ESV

17 She dresses herself[e] with strength

    and makes her arms strong.

Proverbs 31:20-21 ESV

20 She opens her hand to the poor

and reaches out her hands to the needy.

21 She is not afraid of snow for her household,

for all her household are well-clothed

Proverbs 31:25-30 ESV

25 Strength and dignity are her clothing,

and she laughs at the time to come.

26 She opens her mouth with wisdom,

and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.

27 She looks well to the ways of her household

and does not eat the bread of idleness.

28 Her children rise up and call her blessed;

her husband also, and he praises her:

29 “Many women have done excellently,

    but you surpass them all.”

30 Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain,

but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
